Wax Dipping
Enhance and Protect Your Wooden Hives with Long-Lasting Wax Treatment
In recent years, for our own wooden hives, we have abandoned all paints and wood treatments. and now wax dip (or more accurately wax fry) all our wooden boxes and floors, new and old alike, in a specially formulated blend of paraffin and microcrystalline waxes.
This preserves the wood, said to be for at least 20 years, and can be redone as often as you wish. Leaves no traces of chemicals that can contaminate the hive and leaves a natural looking hive that generally appeals well to landowners.
We perform the treatment at 160C which gives the boxes a waterproof exterior yet does not leave them waxy as lower temperatures can. Also 160C effectively sterilizes all the used boxes with no need for use of a blow torch, and is said to be effective against both EFB and AFB.
We offer the dipping as an optional extra on all wooden boxes and floors…on other hive parts it is not generally done as it is not required, and the heat can make plywood parts warp.
To choose the wax dipped option please simply request it on your order. You will find the Wax dipping in the Shop > Beekeeping Equipment > Wax section of our shop. Alternatively, click on the link below.
